Tonight after our guests had left we noticed that there was a lot of bird activity. Looking outside we realised that these weren't swallows but were our first sighting this year of the house martins. They were taking pieces of straw from the side of the road and flying back over the field with them, presumably to where they were building nests. For a couple of hours they worked at the task non stop. It was a fascinating sight and we felt privileged to observe it so close up.
